The Secret History of Mac Gaming: Expanded Edition

The Macintosh changed video games. It challenged the medium to be more than child’s play and quick reflexes. It made human-computer interaction friendly, inviting, and intuitive. Mac gaming led to much that is now taken for granted by PC gamers and spawned some of the biggest franchises in video game history — including MystHalo, and SimCity. It allowed anyone to create games and playful software with ease, and gave indie developers a home for their products.

It welcomed strange ideas and encouraged experimentation. It fostered passionate and creative communities who inspired and challenged developers to do better and to follow the Mac mantra: ‘think different’.

Written by award-winning journalist and game historian Richard Moss, The Secret History of Mac Gaming draws on a combination of archive material and around 80 interviews with key figures from the era to tell the story of those communities and the game developers who survived and thrived in an ecosystem that was serially ignored by the outside world. It’s a book about people who followed their hearts first and market trends second, showing how clever, quirky, and downright wonderful video games could be.

The Secret History of Mac Gaming also features guest chapters from Craig Fryar, Apple’s first Mac games evangelist and the co-creator of hit game Spectre, as well as specially-created divider illustrations and cover art by graphic designer and pixel artist JJ Signal, all styled in the gorgeous 1-bit aesthetics of early Macintosh games. At 480 pages long, The Secret History of Mac Gaming features eye-catching coloured page edges, a hardback cover printed with pantone inks and a colour-coded bookmark ribbon. As with all our books, we use thread sewn binding for extra durability and print lithographically on high-quality paper to showcase the gorgeous visuals as they deserve.

This newly-expanded edition adds around 70 pages of extra content, including a foreword by The 7th Guest co-creator and id Software and Apple alum Graeme Devine, plus an annotated timeline, over 60 extra images, an icon gallery, and more than 6,000 extra words added to the chapter narratives — on top of the 115,000 words from the 1st edition — covering a variety of additional game and developer stories, including the tales behind SnoodChaos OverlordsThe Dungeon of Doom, and more. It also revises and updates the design, based on reader feedback, to provide a better reading experience.

Incredible Experience all around

So I had my eye on Bitmaps books for a while, hemming and hawing over which book I would order first. When the Mac Gaming book was announced I knew that would be my first. From ordering to reading and everything in between was a marvelous experience Ordering : I live in California in the US. I placed my order on a Friday morning and my book was on my doorstep by the following Tuesday! Overseas shipping to the US West Coast in 3 business days? Amazing? Unboxing - The meticulous care that is taken to protect the book was simply astounding. Foam inserts protecting every corner of the book. The book itself was shirinkwrapped. My only regret was not filming the unboxing to post on YouTube! The Book - The book itself is nothing short of amazing. Growing up in the 80's I was a Mac user until the late 90's even working for Apple between 1992-1998. The see all the games I grew up with and those I played well into the 90's was a fun history review. I'm already looking forward to my next purchase from Bitmap Books which most likely will be the Amiga anthology. Can't wait to see what you release next!

A gift for myself - a true keepsake!

I missed out on the last lot before Christmas, so I patiently waited for this batch. It was definitely worth the wait. A beautifully-crafted hard-cover book, right down to the blue on the edges of the pages. I wouldn’t normally splurge on something like this for myself, but just look at what you get! It’s so worth it! International shipping was faster than Bitmap Books’ own prediction. (I very much agree it’s better to under-promise and over-deliver, which was the case here!) Ordered late on a Thursday and arrived in Western Canada on Monday! Fantastic! One little quibble: The regional carrier, DHL, initially failed to deliver the package because they reported "nobody was home.” That was false (I’ll hold back from saying “it was a lie”). I saw the truck making its way around the townhouse complex, so I kept close by in the next room, awaiting the doorbell when they got to my end of the complex. 15 minutes later, I got the text/email “Nobody home” alerts instead, as the driver was probably rushing elsewhere on their route. Not much Bitmap Books can do about the courier partner in Canada, but they may want to know. Oh well… I got it fine the next day after rescheduling the delivery. The book comes expertly packaged in many protective layers of foam and cellophane. “Unboxing” was definitely a highlight. I’ve gushed about the physical book… I have to admit that I’ve just started reading the book! So far, it’s terrific - I’m learning new things about old favourites in classic Mac gaming. I think I’ll get lots of re-reads out of this, kind of like how I kept reading the “Macintosh Bible” (and I still have it). “Secret History of Mac Gaming” is a worthy addition to my library.

Beautiful and high quality book.

Overall great experience. Shipping was fast and book extremely professionally packed for today’s age of abusive delivery people. The art is well represented and the information is great to read on these old gems all these years later.

Was hoping for more pictures

It’s a good book but I was expecting a lot more pictures, similar to the other bitmap books. This isn’t a coffee table book.

A tomb of knowledge

The book is too quality. Only quirk is they settled on a short and far format. I would love to see some taller books to show off art and photos better. But the content is too notch. Im placing my order for the JRPG book next.
