The Secret History of Mac Gaming: Expanded Edition

The Macintosh changed video games. It challenged the medium to be more than child’s play and quick reflexes. It made human-computer interaction friendly, inviting, and intuitive. Mac gaming led to much that is now taken for granted by PC gamers and spawned some of the biggest franchises in video game history — including MystHalo, and SimCity. It allowed anyone to create games and playful software with ease, and gave indie developers a home for their products.

It welcomed strange ideas and encouraged experimentation. It fostered passionate and creative communities who inspired and challenged developers to do better and to follow the Mac mantra: ‘think different’.

Written by award-winning journalist and game historian Richard Moss, The Secret History of Mac Gaming draws on a combination of archive material and around 80 interviews with key figures from the era to tell the story of those communities and the game developers who survived and thrived in an ecosystem that was serially ignored by the outside world. It’s a book about people who followed their hearts first and market trends second, showing how clever, quirky, and downright wonderful video games could be.

The Secret History of Mac Gaming also features guest chapters from Craig Fryar, Apple’s first Mac games evangelist and the co-creator of hit game Spectre, as well as specially-created divider illustrations and cover art by graphic designer and pixel artist JJ Signal, all styled in the gorgeous 1-bit aesthetics of early Macintosh games. At 480 pages long, The Secret History of Mac Gaming features eye-catching coloured page edges, a hardback cover printed with pantone inks and a colour-coded bookmark ribbon. As with all our books, we use thread sewn binding for extra durability and print lithographically on high-quality paper to showcase the gorgeous visuals as they deserve.

This newly-expanded edition adds around 70 pages of extra content, including a foreword by The 7th Guest co-creator and id Software and Apple alum Graeme Devine, plus an annotated timeline, over 60 extra images, an icon gallery, and more than 6,000 extra words added to the chapter narratives — on top of the 115,000 words from the 1st edition — covering a variety of additional game and developer stories, including the tales behind SnoodChaos OverlordsThe Dungeon of Doom, and more. It also revises and updates the design, based on reader feedback, to provide a better reading experience.

A brilliant flashback to my Mac gaming past.

I thought I made all those games up, but it turns out they were real and on my Mac in an era when CD-ROMs were cool and you had to send your dad's check to a physical address in order to pay a shareware creator.

An excellent Expanded Edition to an already fantastic book

I crowdfunded the first edition of The Secret History of Mac Gaming. I got two new books: one for me and one for a game developer friend. We would talk about games on the 9" B&W monitors and on the early color Macs that ran the "big cat" OS's. He enjoyed the Expanded Edition as much as I.

SUPERB! A must have book!

Packing is incredible! Years ago, I bought the 1st edition book from another vendor, but it wasn't packed well and some corners were bent during shipping. Buying the Expanded edition direct from Bitmap Books is night and day better! Bitmap Books packing is absolutely incredible! It will survive even a deliberate slam onto concrete! Not only that, but the entire book comes shrink-wrapped too. The book has a lovely blue gild on the page edges that really makes it special and much more attractive than the 1st edition. Not only that, but this 2nd edition has decent margins (whitespace) around the text, whereas the 1st edition put the text almost to the edge of the page, which was not lovely to behold, let me tell you. Margins on the Expanded edition are so nice! This 2nd edition is also much thicker, and surprisingly so, but in a good way. It's one hefty book and a pleasure to read. On top of all that, I got a searchable PDF of the book too, immediately upon paying for my order. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that bonus! I highly recommend this excellent tome for any vintage Mac fan, especially if you grew up with the Mac and played many of these games back in the day. —JDW from YouTube

Incredible Experience all around

So I had my eye on Bitmaps books for a while, hemming and hawing over which book I would order first. When the Mac Gaming book was announced I knew that would be my first. From ordering to reading and everything in between was a marvelous experience Ordering : I live in California in the US. I placed my order on a Friday morning and my book was on my doorstep by the following Tuesday! Overseas shipping to the US West Coast in 3 business days? Amazing? Unboxing - The meticulous care that is taken to protect the book was simply astounding. Foam inserts protecting every corner of the book. The book itself was shirinkwrapped. My only regret was not filming the unboxing to post on YouTube! The Book - The book itself is nothing short of amazing. Growing up in the 80's I was a Mac user until the late 90's even working for Apple between 1992-1998. The see all the games I grew up with and those I played well into the 90's was a fun history review. I'm already looking forward to my next purchase from Bitmap Books which most likely will be the Amiga anthology. Can't wait to see what you release next!
