Description

The Super Nintendo hosted an impressive spread of best-in-class role-playing games, making it a favourite machine of many genre aficionados. Those games also left a profound legacy of influence that went far beyond the RPG genre alone. The Definitive Book of SNES RPGs Vol. 1 serves as an essential, highly visual guide to an era of game history that every gaming fan should know.

Written by game critic and researcher Moses Norton, The Definitive Book of SNES RPGs Vol. 1 brings you over 550 pages packed with detailed writing, developer quotes, and genre history – and is filled to the brim with restored art and lost knowledge, printed to the highest standards. As the first volume in the series, The Definitive Book of SNES RPGs Vol. 1 is alphabetically focused, concentrating on games titled A-to-K, including The 7th Saga, Eye of the Beholder, Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, EarthBound, EVO, Final Fantasy II, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Knights of the Round, and many more.

The book is not a trivial ranking of favourites, a bartering of factoids, or a stroll down memory lane. It is an uncompromising and exhaustive study of the artistry, ideology, and legacy of SNES RPGs using a methodology and scope that has never been attempted before in any published work.

Norton set out on a mission to understand not just what the games contain – but also what they mean. Built around a collection of essays, The Definitive Book of SNES RPGs Vol. 1 asks why these RPGs continue to endure, why they still top ‘best of’ lists 30 years later, why fans still clamor for their remakes and remasters, and what philosophies animated their pixels and prose.

Framed by a foreword from writer and editor Alex Donaldson, founder and director of the Mist Network and RPG Site, and anchored by a comprehensive release timeline spanning the Super Nintendo's place in tech history, The Definitive Book of SNES RPGs Vol. 1 guides adventurers through the halcyon days of 16-bit storytelling with rigor and reverence, simplicity, idealism, and humour.

For collectors, historians, scholars, and lifelong genre fans this is the definitive resource, a hardcore hardcover for those who believe that video games – especially role-playing games – are an art form all their own. Echoing this admiration of the arts, the cover boasts a gilded design by professional artist Stephen Sitton, aka Stumpyfongo, featuring iconic RPG villains Kefka Palazzo, the Goddess Tyr, and Lavos.

This Collector’s Edition (limited to 1,000 units), comes in a heavy duty foil-blocked soft-touch slipcase. A standard hardback is also available.

Includes quotes, insights, and anecdotes from:

FAQs

Why two separate volumes?
To cover all 46 games in the required detail, would have resulted in a 1000+ page book. Rather then lessen the scope of the project, it was decided to split over two volumes: A-K and L-Y.
How is this different to A Guide to Japanese Role-Playing Games?
A Guide to Japanese Role-Playing Games covers over 600 titles, each one in moderate detail. The idea behind The Definitive Book of SNES RPGs Vol.1 is cover fewer games (22), but in a much greater detail. It is an uncompromising and exhaustive study of the artistry, ideology, and legacy of SNES RPGs using a methodology and scope that has never been attempted before in any published work.
Does the book also cover Japanese-exclusive RPGs?
We're sorry to disappoint anyone expecting to find Japanese-exclusive RPGs such as Sailor Moon RPG, Live A Live, the Dragon Quests or Final Fantasy V. The author decided to focus on SNES RPGs originally released outside of Japan. Perhaps someday you’ll be able to read a Definitive Book of Super Famicom RPGs.

SNES RPGs Vol. 1 Collector's Edition

First, no Bitmap Books review can be written without detailing the packaging and shipping of the book. Bitmap Books has to be the leader in the industry on this. Every book is wrapped in paper, corners protected with foam padding, wrapped in a cardboard box specifically sized for the book, and then boxed in an additional box for shipping. I've almost completely stopped ordered books online from anywhere else. I will buy books in person in a store, but to trust that other companies will package the book so it doesn't show up with corners crushed and the slipcase split, it's not happening. Second, the book is the same great quality as all the other Bitmap Books I own. This is the 20th Bitmap Book I own and I am getting ready to order 2 more. This book is one of my favorites. I spent a little more to get the Collector's Edition because I love the SNES pixel art style and I love that age of RPGs, so I enjoy having the premium edition of this book. I've flipped through the 500+ pages and it is top quality. I can't retire from work for a long time, but I'm using this book and hopefully volume 2 to plan out my retirement plan of playing through all of these games. Let's be honest, some of these games are going to stink, so I'm sure I won't finish all of them, but I am definitely going to work my way through trying every single one of them out. I was a pretty big fan of this genre when I was younger and the SNES was one of our primary systems in the house, but obviously…

    Beautiful Book

Bought this for my son who teaches game history and game art. Although I can't review the content, I can say that the book is beautifully printed and bound. It was packaged better than most things and arrived in a timely manner to the US from England. I will definitely ordering more books from Bitmap. Thanks for a lovely book and fantastic customer service.
